Bastrop's Carter grabs sixth place at region track meet

Bastrop sprinter Jaden Carter finished in sixth place in the 100-meter dash final at the Class 5A Region 3 track and field meet at Turner Stadium in Humble on Saturday.


Carter, a senior, was timed in 12.30 seconds. She had qualified for the final by taking eighth place in the preliminaries in 12.72 on Friday.


Carter, who has received interest from Tarleton State and Texas State track programs, scored Bastrop’s only point in the region meet.


Carter ran faster in the area round at 12.24. She stepped off the accelerator at area because of a slight pull in her left hamstring muscle. Carter’s older sister and Bastrop track coach, LeLe Carter, said the hamstring was not a factor at region.


Laila Payne, a sophomore from Houston Carnegie Vanguard, captured the gold in the 100 in 12.06.


Only the top two athletes in each event advance automatically to the state meet.


Bastrop freshman Za’Myra Binion showed future promise, claiming eighth place in the discus with a personal record of 107 feet, 3 inches.

Bastrop senior Cole Widner had his best finish in the 110-meter high hurdles, taking ninth in 15.47 in the preliminaries and just missing the finals. He was 12th in the 300 hurdles in 41.94 in the preliminaries.


None of Bastrop girls relay teams advanced to the finals on Saturday. The 400-meter relay consisting of Taylor Gonzalez, Victoria Hickman, Carlie Vinklarek, and Yesliann Matos were 15th in 51.11.


The 800 relay team of Gonzalez, Hickman, Vinklarek, and Alaysia Williams finished 16th in 1:49.84.


Kailee Anzaldua, Vinklarek, Gilliam Schneider, and Hickman took 16th in the 1,600 relay in 4:36.70.


Bastrop’s Grace Sagebiel finished 14th in the shot put at 33-6½.


Bastrop’s Levi Nichols was 13th in the 200 preliminaries in 23.79 but did not advance to the finals.


Cooper Lovelace of Bastrop took 14th in the discus at 107-1.


Bastrop pole vaulter Jaden Michael missed the opening height of 10-6.


Cedar Creek boys 400 relay team of Tucker Fitzhugh, Nathan Ervin, Dakota Baker, and Seth Staples were 13th in 43.23 in the preliminaries.
